The barrier was originally installed to prevent saltwater from pushing with the tides into the central Sacramento- San Joaquin Delta, which provides 25 million Californians with water. Dutra removed the barrier which consisted of approximately 150,000 tons of rip rap, re-opening West False River to water traffic.
The removed rock is stored near Rio Vista for possible use if drought conditions continue and installation of an emergency drought barrier is once again deemed necessary to preserve water quality.
