SAN RAFAEL, CA– The Department of Water Resources Erosion Repair Project has been selected as the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) Public Works Project of the Year for 2007.
The Dutra Group, which served as primary contractor for the emergency levee project in the Sacramento Delta, will receive a plaque recognizing this achievement at the APWA annual Awards Recognition Ceremony in San Antonio, Texas on Monday, September 10th.
Bill Dutra, who owns The Dutra Group, will accept the award on behalf of the company.
“This award is a testament to the efforts set forth by our entire team to make the DWR Emergency Levee Erosion Repair Project a proud achievement,” said Bill Dutra.
“Much of our success is due to the Company’s unique ability to provide a full-service response to an emergency situation.
In addition to having all the materials, equipment and people necessary to get the job done, this company has 30+ years of experience and expertise in levee maintenance and repair work.
We are the only quarry with waterside barging capabilities which enables us to get materials to levees that are not accessible by truck.
The barges have become critical to the delivery of materials to the Delta, particularly in an emergency situation.”
When public emergencies were declared on January 3, 2006 by several Reclamation Districts working with the California Department of Water Resources, The San Rafael Rock Quarry, a part of The Dutra Group, responded immediately.
The Quarry barged 800,000 tons of rock to stabilize and repair levee failures in the Sacramento Delta region in 2006 alone.
In the past, the San Rafael Rock Quarry has provided emergency work for regional disasters including the repair of the Bay Bridge following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 2004 breach of the Jones Tract levee in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta.
“For us, the residents and businesses of Northern California are our customers,” said Dutra.
“The vulnerability of the levees in the Delta could potentially destroy our ecosystem, jeopardize the water supplies for millions of Californians and result in the loss of businesses, homes and possibly lives.
Our commitment is to protect the system as best we can and it’s rewarding to be recognized for serving our customers in this fashion.”
The San Rafael Rock Quarry is located at 1000 North San Pedro Road in San Rafael, California.
