San Rafael Rock Quarry Converts to Bio-Diesel

October 20, 2006

DUTRA MATERIALS GOES ‘GREEN’ AND CONVERTS TO BIO-DIESEL FUEL FOR ALL QUARRY VEHICLES

SAN RAFAEL, CA – Dutra Materials, owner of the San Rafael Rock Quarry, has announced that it is converting to the use of bio-diesel on all Quarry vehicles immediately.

The company researched many fuel alternatives to lower emissions at the Quarry site and found that bio-diesel is the only fuel substitute to have fully passed the EPA Clean Air Act’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 Health Effects Testing.

Dutra Materials will be joining other North Bay bio-diesel fuel users such as Ghilotti Construction, North Bay Construction, Marin Sanitary Service and the County of Marin, to name a few, in its quest to reduce emissions.

More and more companies are converting to bio-diesel because this fuel alternative is safe, biodegradable and reduces serious air pollutants such as particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulfates and other air toxins.

“The concept was presented to us by Supervisor Susan Adams and after much research and discussions with other bio-diesel fuel users we felt its use in all of our equipment at the San Rafael Rock Quarry would result in a dramatic reduction in emissions at the site,” said Dutra spokesperson Aimi Dutra.

“Bio-diesel is good for the environment and our goal at the Quarry is to do our best to have our operations be as environmentally friendly as possible.”

“I am pleased that the San Rafael Rock Quarry is making the bio-diesel conversion,” Supervisor Adams. “Not only will it reduce toxic emissions in the community but will contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gasses overall. It is my hope that other companies using diesel powered equipment will make the change to cleaner fuels.”

According to Dutra, the company will take this course of action one step beyond its own fleet of vehicles.

"We will encourage all trucks that haul Quarry-produced aggregate to consider using this environmentally friendly fuel source," Dutra continued.  "While we cannot guarantee that all our customers will switch to bio-diesel fuel, we intend to actively encourage them to seriously consider it and take that additional step for a safer environment."
